1. What is a verb phrase?

1. A verb phrase is a collection of verbs that go together.

   1. I am trying

   2. The children should have gone home afterwards.

   3. By next year, I will have taught for 18 years.

2. Here are some examples:

   1. I am walking. ("am walking" is the verb phrase.)

   2. Much of the time, "ing" words aren't verbs at all.

   3. Walking to school is fun. (In this sentence, "walking" is actually a noun).

   4. That teacher is really annoying. (In this sentence, "annoying" is actually an adjective.

2. A note: "ING" words are NEVER VERBS BY THEMSELVES.

3. Predicate: The verb of the sentence and all the words that modify (go with) that verb.
   a. I am.

   b. She attacked the driver.

   c. The ball is bouncing.

   d. Driving in the rain is my favorite thing to do.

4. For example:

   1. The car jumped and flipped over the median. ("jumped and flipped" both predicates)

   2. My aunt and my best friend bought me a Mercedes. ("My aunt and best friend" are both the subject, "bought me a Mercedes" is the predicate.
