Transfer of Electric Charge -review

• An electrical conductor is a material in which

charges can move freely.

• An electrical insulator is a material in which charges

cannot move freely.

​Transfering charges

• 3 ways to transfer charges:

  • Conduction

  • Friction

  • Induction

• Remember - only ELECTRONS can move from one object to another

​Friction

• Electrons are transfered from one object to another by rubbing them together.

• Example: socks on a wool carpet or a balloon on your sweater

• Electrons move from one object to another, afterwards one object is (+) charged and the other is (-) charged.

​Conduction

• Electrons are shared so that both objects are charged at the end.

• Objects with excess electrons transfer them by touch to another object.

• Charges equal out between the objects.

Transfer of Electric Charge - induction

• A surface charge can be

induced on insulators by
polarization.

• Induction - a charged object "pushes" the charges of a neutral object due to repellent forces.

• When the charged object is removed the neutral object returns to "normal"
