MALIN KUNDANG
Once upon a time in West Sumatra, there lived a poor family. The family consisted of a mother, her son named Malin Kundang, and his father, who decided to go abroad in search of a better life. Malin was a hardworking but sometimes naughty boy. He often helped his mother catch fish to make ends meet. As Malin grew older, he became a handsome young man, and he felt sorry for his mother, who struggled alone. Determined to change their fate, Malin decided to go on a journey, sailing with a great captain. With his mother's reluctant blessing, Malin set off to find a better life.
Years passed, and Malin's mother lived alone, growing older and lonelier. Every day, she looked out to sea, hoping for her son’s return. She never received any news from Malin. One day, while returning from the market, Malin's mother met the captain who had once sailed with her son. The captain shared the news that Malin had become a wealthy and successful man. Filled with joy, she rushed home to prepare for his arrival. The next morning, Malin’s ship, large and luxurious, arrived at the harbor. As Malin stepped off the ship with his beautiful wife, his mother called out to him with love and excitement. However, when Malin’s wife asked him who the old, ragged woman was, Malin denied knowing her. He was ashamed of his mother and, to everyone's shock, pushed her to the ground, leaving her heartbroken.
Devastated by her son’s rejection, Malin's mother prayed to God, asking for justice. Suddenly, the bright sky turned dark, and a violent storm emerged. Malin’s grand ship was struck by lightning, and chaos ensued. The ship was destroyed, and Malin’s wife perished in the wreckage. As the ship sank, Malin found himself stranded on an island, helpless and full of regret. But it was too late. As punishment for his disrespect, Malin was turned into stone. His fate served as a lesson: to always love and respect one’s mother, for she is the one who gave us life.
