3

Multiple Choice

What is an ad hoc network?

1
An ad hoc network is a network that requires a fixed infrastructure to operate
2
An ad hoc network is a centralized type of wired network
3

An ad hoc network is a wireless network that requires no specialist equipment.

4
An ad hoc network is a network that can only be accessed by one device at a time

4

Match

Match the following

Mobile Connectivity

Open WiFi

Tethering/Hotspot

PAN

Uses 5G/4G to connect to cell towers.

Internet Access in public places.

Can share internet connectivity.

Direct connection between devices.

Although Ad Hoc networks have many benefits there are some issues that users of this network should be aware of.

There are two main problematic areas you need to have an understanding of:

Ad Hoc Network Issues

  • Security concerns.

  • Performance issues.

6

  • Open WiFi lacks security, as it does not encrypt the data that is sent. This means hackers can intercept and read this.

Security Issues

  • If encryption is used, it is weak so data could still be hacked. Encryption is when we scramble data so it cannot be read.

  • Hackers will often use these networks to intercept data being sent. If it is not encrypted they can read it.

Performance is another issue that people can have when using ad-hoc networks.

Performance Issues

  • If too many devices are connected, the data must be shared making load times slower, this is known as low bandwidth.

  • The distance from the transmitting device will impact on the performance.

  • When using tethering, this can use a lot of data and end up being quite expensive.

10

More issues

  • Prone to viruses and hackers due to lack of security.

  • Rural areas might not have coverage or will be slower.

  • Less developed countries do not have the infrastructure.

  • Demanding tasks such as streaming 4k Netflix movies can slow down network for others.

  • Blackspots occur in certain areas, this is when the signal is weak in parts of the building due to distance, height or the material blocking signals.

11

Match

Match the following terms to their description

Bandwidth

Encryption

Blackspots

Rural

Hackers

Data to share between users.

Scrambling data makes it unreadable.

Areas where signal does not reach.

Countryside so less coverage.

Intercept data to read it.

12

Multiple Choice

What is a disadvantage of an ad-hoc network?

1
Limited scalability
2
High cost of implementation
3

Complexity to set up.

4
Vulnerability to security threats

13

Multiple Choice

Jimmy is using the Open Wifi in his busy hotel. Jimmy is trying to respond his emails, however he notices it is running slow, why might he be struggling with his connectivity?

1

The hotel has not paid enough for a good internet connection.

2

Jimmy's device is outdated meaning it is running slow.

3
Interference from nearby electronic devices
4

Too many users so each user is getting limited bandwidth.

14

Multiple Choice

Tina is trying to do her online shopping whilst she is in McDonald's, whilst using Open WiFi. Another person warns Tina to be careful, why do you think they warned her?

1

The other person wanted to use the WiFi themselves and did not want her slowing it down.

2

The other person was trying to sell Tina something themselves

3

The other person did not like the product that Tina was trying to buy.

4

Lack of encryption on Open WiFi means her bank details could be at risk.

15

Main Task

Computer Task:

Develop the leaflet you started last lesson even further. You should add an issues section. Your issues section should include both security issues and performance issues. You should use the key terms:

Complete all the questions on the work sheet.

  • Encryption

  • Bandwidth

  • Distance

  • Blackspots

  • Infrastructure

  • Coverage
