A pole is buried below the ground. The top of the pole stands 21 feet above the ground. The bottom of the pole is 6 feet below the ground. How long is the pole from the top to the bottom?
Select the best equation for the situation
21 - 6 = 15
21 + (-6) = 15
21 + 6 = 27
21 + (-6) = 27

Distance between integers
Absolute Value is distance on the number line
When we talk about distance between integers, we use absolute value, because we are just counting the number of spaces on the number line.
Negative and Positive tell us the direction of the change.
Absolute Value tells us the amount of the change.
10
Remember: An equation is like a story. There's a start (first number)
A middle (direction/amount of change)
An ending (what it equals)
Equation Stories
11
If the story does not cross zero, the distance is just the difference between absolute values.
Equation Stories
12
If the story DOES cross zero, look for the distance between beginning and zero, then the end and zero, then add them to get the middle

Write a note to remind yourself how to find distance on the number line.
