General Anatomy

•Cerebrum – sensation, higher order
thinking, motor control
•Cerebellum – coordinating
movement
•Diencephalon – relay center for
sensory information
•Midbrain – coordinates motor
activity, especially for eyes
•Brainstem – controls involuntary
functions, like breathing

Cerebrum

Divided Into Left & Right Hemispheres

•Each hemisphere receives info from/controls muscles of
opposite side of body
•Some specialization of function, but people aren’t left or
right brained

Corpus Callosum

•Bundle of axons that
connect left & right cerebral
hemispheres

Cerebral Cortex

•Thin, top layer of
cerebrum
•Contains cell bodies
•Functional area of
cerebrum
•Different areas perform
different functions

Cerebral Lobes Have Specific Functions

•Frontal – Decision making,
planning & executing
motor movements
•Parietal – Touch sensation,
integration of sensory info
•Temporal – Auditory
sensation, memory
formation, language
interpretation
•Occipital – Visual sensation

Primary Motor & Somatosensory Cortices

•Primary motor cortex sends signals to motor neurons to
move voluntary muscles
•Somatosensory cortex receives sensory information from the
skin
•Size of area dedicated to region indicates sensitivity

Homunculi

•Representation of how much cortex devoted to
control/sensitivity of particular region of body
•Hands & face tend to be more heavily represented

Speech Centers

•Broca’s Area: near motor
cortex

•Involved in speech
production

•Wernicke’s Area: near
auditory cortex

•Involved in speech
interpretation
