Quotation Marks

Quotation marks are used to show when someone is speaking

Quotation marks look like this: “ ”​

•Quotation marks go around the actual words a person speaks.

•Quotation marks go before the first word that is spoken and after the last word that is spoken.

Quotation Marks - How do I use them?

When do you use quotation marks?

1) Keep quotation marks at the beginning and end of speech

• 2) If there is a new speaker, start a new line.

  • Example:

    "Wow, the weather is getting cooler!" exc​laimed Ricky

    "Yes, you need to bring a jacket with you to school" said May

Quotation Marks - How do I use them?

​3) Begin direct speech with a capital letter.

Example: "What a wonderful day!" said Mrs Trang

4) Make sure your speechh is correctly punctuated. This includes a piece of punctuation before closing the quotation marks.
