DO NOT ENCLOSE THE BED BOUND RESIDENT WITH PRIVACY CURTAINS WHEN FEEDING THEM
Because eating is a social activity of daily living.......
Provide a pleasant environment
clean area
odor free
adequate lighting
*flowers / decorations and music add interest to the dining area
make meals an enjoyable and sociable experience

get the resident clean and dressed for meals
comb hair
provide oral hygiene
encourage them to use the bathroom
cleanse and dry incontinent residents
wash their hands before and after meals
Before Meals... MAKE SURE TO:

Always Check...
to be certain that the resident received the correct tray and has the correct diet
Make sure foods is in reach of the resident
See if everything that the resident needs is on the tray
Assist resident as needed with:
cutting meat
pouring liquids
buttering bread
opening containers
Provide Comfort
raise hob
position in chair
transport to dining area and
Provide clothing protector if appropriate
Clothing protector
offer but do not insist, resident has the right to refuse
DO NOT use the term "bib," it decreases the residents dignity by treating them like children
MAKE SURE TO PT 2

provide resident time to finish meal
display patient, pleasant attitude while assisting
remove tray when meal is finished
tell the nurse if resident is not eating
observe and record amount eaten in %
Assist to position of comfort
call signal and supplies should be in reach
Area should be left clean and tidy
Wash hands before and after care
orient blind residents need their food placed on their plate according to the face on the clock
approach resident from non affected side
Alternate fluid and food
residents should be encouraged to do as much for themselves as possible
Record fluid intake if ordered
