Conditionals

​In conditional sentences, we have two clauses:​

• Situation + result (possible/ impossible)

If you have time (situation), we will go to the cinema (result)

Zero conditional ​

​- Situations that always happen

If you water plants, they grow.​

- Situations that are generally true​

If you heat water, it boils. ​

​PRESENT SIMPLE + WILL

FIRST conditional ​

​- Possible situations in the future

​

If you read before going to bed, you will sleep better. ​

​PAST SIMPLE + WOULD

SECOND conditional ​

1. Wishes, unlikely situations ​

   If Ana were older, she would be a scientist because she loves it.

   If Ana had money, she would spend it in scientific books.

2. Advice: for helping other people

   Liza is having troubles to sleep.

​If I were you, I wouldn't use the phone before going to sleep.

​WOULD HAVE + HAD + PAST PARTICIPLE

thrid conditional ​

1. Imaginary situations in the past (something we regret, we would like to be different in the past):

   If I had study more, I would have passed the exam.

   If the accident hadn't happened, he wouldn't have been in the hospital.​
