A.  Conditional Sentences Type 1

It is a structure used for talking about possibilities in the present or in the future. The formula of conditional sentence (type 1) is :

 “Subject 1 (will/can/may/must) + Verb 1 + If + Subject 2 + Present .”

 “If + Subject 2 + Present + Subject 1 (will/can/may/must) + Verb 1 .”​

​Example :

​1.  you will miss the bus if you don’t hurry . / if you don’t hurry, you will miss the bus.

​2.   I will buy this laptop If I have the money, . / If I have the money, I will buy this laptop.

​​3.   we’ll go to the market,   If it’s sunny . / If it’s sunny, we’ll go to the market.

​​4.  you will get wet If it rains. /  If it rains, you will get wet.

​​5.  I will be madIf Sally is late again . /  If Sally is late again, I will be mad.

B. Conditional Sentences Type 2

It is a structure used for talking about unreal situations in the present or in the future. Type 2 :

• ​if + Subject I + simple past + Subject 2 + (would/could/might) + V1/be

Examples:

1. If I had the money, I would buy this car. (Fact: Since I do not have the money I cannot buy any new car )

   = The action in type 2 is characterized by unreality.

2. If I were you, I would drive more carefully in the rain.

3. If dogs had wings, they would be able to fly.

4. Paula would be sad if Jan left.

C. Conditional Sentences Type 3

It is a structure used for talking about unreal situations in the past. In other words, it is used to talk about things which DID NOT HAPPEN in the past.Type 3 :

​

if + Subject I +past perfect + Subject 2 + ( would/could/might ) + have V3/been.

​

Examples:

1. If I had the money, I would have bought this Audi.

   ​( But I did not have it, and so did not buy ).

2. You would not have had an accident if you had driven more carefully.

   (You had an accident because you didn’t drive carefully enought ).

3. If we had played a little better, we could have won the game.

   ( We didn’t play well, so we lost the game ).
