​Light Lets Us See

1. ​You open your eyes in the morning and what do you see? The walls of your room? The colors in the sky? The clothes you pick out to wear?

2. ​Did you ever wonder how you can see those things?

​What is Light?

• ​Greeks believed light was a stream of particles that flowed like water.

• ​1600s, Christian Huygens:

  • Developed a THEORY, light is like waves. Moved in straight lines, had tops and bottoms, and could be short of long.

• 1800s, Thomas Young:

  • Designed experiment that proved them right. Shined a light through a narrow slit in a piece of paper.​

​Types of Light

• ​Artificial

  • ​Controlled by people

  • ​Candles, Light Bulbs, OLEDS, Lasers

• ​Natural

  • ​Cannot be controlled

  • ​Sun, Stars, Lightning

​Visible Light

• ​Made up of different colors

• ​We see whatever color is bounced off of the object.

• ​When our eyes sense light with all the colors, it sees it as a special color.

  • ​That color is white.
