​You can find the noun in these two ways, as a “subject” or as an “object”.

​Subject Noun

​The person/people or thing/things doing the action in the sentence.

​

​For example:

​The boy and girl were holding hands as they crossed the bridge on the way to town.

​

​Emily loved spending time with her Aunt Nancy in Paris.

​

​Margaret has six pairs of blue sandals.

​

​Love is in the air.

​

​

​The sentence is about love. Although air is a noun, it is not the subject of the sentence.

​

​Steve buys the band some sandwiches.

​

​

​Steve is the subject noun because he is the one doing the action in the sentence.

​

​This plant comes from a tropical lands.

​

​The subject is this plant, because this is the noun doing the action in the sentence.

​Object Noun

​The object of a sentence is the person or thing that receives the action of the verb. It is the who or what that the subject does something to.

​

​Martha bought two dresses for prom. (What did Martha buy?)

​The dogs ate all their food. (What did the dogs eat?)

​Samantha took her daughter to the doctor. (Who did Samantha take?)

​

​Carla drank two bottles of water.

​

​What did Carla drink?

​

​Ms. Johnson drank coffee before leaving her house.

​

​What did Ms. Johnson drink?

​

​Martha kissed Luis.

​

​Who did Martha kiss?
