​Types of Plate Boundaries

​Convergent Boundary

• formed when two tectonic plates come towards each other

• results to the formation of notable landforms like mountains and volcanoes

• ​Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate—forms towering mountain ranges, like the Himalayas, as Earth’s crust is crumpled and pushed upward.

​Continental-Continental Covergent Boundary

• ​two continental plates converge

• the older, denser plate​ is being forced deep into the planet underneat a younger, less dense tectonic plate

• ​when the plates converge they smash together and create mountains

​Oceanic-Oceanic Convergent Boundary

• ​two oceanic plates collide

• the younger oceanic plate slides above the older oceanic plate.

• The product of these collisions are volcanic island arcs and trenches.

• Fun fact! Some countries are products an oceanic-oceanic convergent boundary, one is Japan and even Philippines.

​Oceanic-Continental Convergent Boundary

• the denser oceanic plate is pushed under the less dense continental plate in the same manner as at an ocean-ocean boundary

• ​the magma produced adjacent to the subduction zone rises to the base of the continental crust and leads to partial melting of the crustal rock.

​Oceanic-Continental Convergent Boundary

• the resulting magma ascends through the crust, producing a mountain chain with many volcanoes

• as with an ocean-ocean boundary, the subducting crust can produce a deep trench running parallel to the coastline.

Divergent Boundary

• ​occur when two plates move apart

• it can happen in between both continental crust and oceanic crust

• a divergent plate boundary often forms a mountain chain known as a ridge

Divergent Boundary

• One example of a ridge is the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, an undersea chain of mountains that formed as two pairs of tectonic plates spread apart: the North American Plate and the Eurasian Plate in the north, and the South American Plate and the African Plate in the south.

Transform Boundary Boundary

• plates slide past each other, horizontally

• ​one of the examples for this is the San Andreas Fault which is responsible for the California's Earthquake.
