Proclamation of 1763

• ​It came after Britain defeated France in the French and Indian War

• ​First act to affect all 13 colonies

• Colonists were not allowed to move west of the Appalachian Mountains

• ​It helped appease Native Americans, who were angry about colonists taking their land

​Boston Massacre

• Colonists were angry that Britain sent 2,000 soldiers to enforce new taxes, like the Stamp Act (paper) and Townshend Acts (glass, paint, tea)

• ​During the protest, British soldiers opened fire and killed protestors

• ​Crispus Attucks, a free black man, was the first person to die in the massacre (and Revolution)

​Boston Tea Party (1773)

• ​A response to the Tea Act

• Men dumped tea into the Boston Harbor in protest

• ​It was a rallying event that helped unite the 13 Colonies in their anger at Britain

• ​Committees of Correspondence became popular - these groups helped towns and colonies share information about resisting British laws

• Punishments ​against the people of Boston for the Boston Tea Party

• ​Closed Boston Harbor

• ​Replaced elected local Gov't in Boston with an appointed one

• ​Quartering Act: forced colonists to have British soldiers stay in their homes

• ​Colonists were taxed to pay for supplies for soldiers
