Adams is faltering

Adams has lost a lot of support from his allies and the Federalist party is fractured due to the handling of the French. Adams is a longshot and he knows it.

• This is the first election in our history that transferred power peacefully to another party

• Europe routinely had battles over this kind of transfer

• Open campaigns for the first time

• Federalists: John Adams & Charles Pinckney

• Democratic-Republicans: Thomas Jefferson & Aaron Burr

Results

- During this election, Electors had 2 votes each for President, and all but one voted for both candidates in their party. Therefore, the map shown is broken out by party, as opposed to candidate.

Now What???

-Jefferson and Burr went head to head in the Federalist-controlled House of Representatives.

- The winner needed 9 votes to win, but the House did not want Jefferson and when they voted he received only 8 votes. They did this 35 times. Yes, Jefferson and Burr were voted on and tied 35 times in the House of Representatives.

Hamilton's Influence

- Hamilton was the last respected Federalist and had a voice in big decisions for the party. This was just another event that would lead Burr to hate Hamilton enough to duel him.

- The 12th Amendment was passed in 1803 which made Presidents and V.P.s run on the same ticket to avoid this mess again.
