In a digestion reaction, complex molecules are broken down into simpler ones.

In a synthesis reaction, simpler molecules are combined to produce complex molecules. 

Energy is stored in the bonds between atom

 Synthesis reactions create bonds and store energy whereas digestion reactions break bonds and release energy. 

Each have their own building blocks and functions, all macromolecules are made up of repeating smaller subunits.
