În general, în limba română o literă transcrie un singur sunet. Există și excepții:

Litera X notează 2 sunete:

Cei 8 fantastici

Grupurile de litere CE, CI, GE, GI, CHE, CHI, GHE, GHI

Notează 1 sunet:

atunci când în silabă există vocală
ex: ceas

Notează 2 sunete:

atunci când în NU există vocală în silabă (e sau i este vocala)
ex.: cer
