Veterans Day

Veteran's Day is a special holiday that we celebrate on November 11 each year. It's a day to honor and thank all of the men and women who have served in the military. But how and when did this day begin?

Originally, November 11 was called Armistice Day. This name cam from the end of World War I, which lasted from 1914-1918. One November 11, 1918, the fighting stopped. People celebrated peace and remembered the soldiers who fought bravely.

In 1954, after World War II and the Korean War, President Dwight D. Eisenhower decided to change Armistice Day to Veteran's Day. He wanted to honor not just those who fought in World War I but veterans from every war. The change meant that we could celebrate and thank everyone who has served our country.

On Veteran's Day, many people participate in parades, attends ceremonies, and visit veterans. Schools often hold special programs to teach students about the importance of veterans and their sacrifices. Some people wear red poppies, a type of flower, as a symbol of remembrance.
