What is a Noun?

Imagine trying to tell a story without naming anything—it's impossible! You need words to talk about your friends, your school, the games you play, and even your feelings. These naming words are called nouns. A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea. They are the building blocks of our sentences, telling us exactly what we're talking about. Let's learn all about them!

Let's Learn with an Example

Let's look at this paragraph together. I'll show you how I find the nouns.

'The young astronaut felt a surge of joy as her rocket left the Earth. She was on a mission to explore a new galaxy, a lifelong dream.'

First, I'll read the sentence and look for words that name a person. I see the word 'astronaut'. An astronaut is a person, so I know it's a noun.

Next, I'll search for places. 'Earth' is the name of our planet, and 'galaxy' is a type of place in space. Both of them are nouns. I notice 'Earth' is capitalized, which tells me it's a specific place, a proper noun.

Then, I'll look for things. I see 'rocket'. A rocket is a physical object you can see and touch, so it's definitely a noun.

Finally, I'll search for ideas, feelings, or qualities. These can be tricky! I see the word 'joy', which is a feeling. I also see 'mission' and 'dream'. You can't touch a mission or a dream, but they are concepts or ideas. So, 'joy', 'mission', and 'dream' are all nouns, too.
