Raw material- a natural resource taken from the Earth that is used to make something else, example cotton to make clothing, iron ore to make steel

Specialize- focus on a certain product or service

Globalization and Economies

• Globalization has a major effect on economies throughout the world.

• An economy is the way people make and spend money.

• Economic activities include buying and selling goods and services.

Multinational Corporations

A multinational corporation is a company that has a branch in at least one country outside its home country.

Examples:

• Major American fast-food chains have restaurants throughout the world. (McDonalds)

• Manufacturing companies opening factories in multiple countries. (Nike)

Specialization means focusing on making one certain product or service.

• Example: Brazil specializes in coffee production.

• Many developing countries specialize in exporting raw materials.

• Countries often import raw materials and use them to make finished goods.

• In a global economy, countries depend on each other to buy and sell products.

• Specialization helps countries focus on what they do best, but it can also be risky.

Not all countries around the world have the same economic success. Geographers compare countries using characteristics like:

• People in places with higher economic development can spend more time in school instead of helping with tasks such as farming.

• If people have more education, they tend to have more job opportunities.
