Farmers formed the heart of ancient Indian society, and their daily lives tell us a lot about how most people really lived day to day.
Let’s imagine a farmer’s family around 300 BCE , when villages were thriving, agriculture was well organized.
4
Let’s step into the shoes of Ravi, a small farmer in a village near the Ganges plain, along with his wife Mira and their two children.
5
The day began at dawn, with the crow of roosters and the scent of smoke from small household fires.
Ravi and Mira would bathe in the nearby river or village well — cleanliness was not just for hygiene but part of spiritual purity.
They offered a small prayer to Surya (the Sun god) and the household spirits for good crops and protection.
After prayers, they ate a light breakfast — usually flatbread (roti) made from barley or wheat, sometimes with milk or lentils.
6
After sunrise, Ravi headed to the fields with other villagers.
They used wooden plows, iron-tipped tools, and oxen for plowing.
The crops varied by season: rice, barley, wheat, millet, sugarcane, or cotton.
Farming followed the rhythm of the monsoon — planting, weeding, and harvesting all depended on the rains.
Men and older boys worked the land; women often joined for sowing or harvesting.
Mira might bring water or lunch later in the morning, carrying it in clay pots or baskets balanced on her head.
7
During the hottest hours, work paused. The family rested under a banyan or neem tree.
Lunch was simple: rice or millet porridge, vegetables, and maybe curd or buttermilk.
Food was eaten from leaf plates or clay bowls, sitting cross-legged on the ground.
Farmers’ families ate vegetarian most of the time, though occasionally fish, eggs, or goat might be eaten if affordable or during festivals.
8
Ravi returned to the fields to check irrigation channels, tend animals, or repair tools.
Irrigation was vital — some villages had wells, tanks, or small canals managed communally.
Mira spent the afternoon grinding grain, weaving cloth, or making cow-dung cakes for fuel.
Children helped by gathering firewood, feeding animals, or fetching water from the well.
9
As the sun set, the village came alive with sounds of bells, animals, and chatter.
The family washed up, offered evening prayers, and lit a small oil lamp to honor household deities.
Neighbors might gather to talk about the day’s work, listen to a wandering storyteller, or sing folk songs.
The village priest (often a Brahman) might visit to perform small rituals or advise on auspicious days for planting.
10
Dinner was light — leftovers or boiled grains with milk.
The family slept early, often on woven mats or charpoys (rope beds) inside mud-brick huts with thatched roofs.
During summer, many slept outside under the stars, listening to the hum of crickets and frogs.
