Trade, Travel, and Technology

Trade may happen within a country, or occur internationally as countries buy and sell with each other.
When a country imports goods, such as crops or electronics, it receives goods that it might not have otherwise.

• import: buying something from another country

• When a country exports goods, the country makes money.

  • export: selling something to another country

Travel includes migration, when people move from one place to another. Migration allows culture to spread, and it affects how many people live in a certain place.

• Travel also involves shorter-term movement. Many people travel from their homes to work every day.

• How do goods and people travel?

Technology has developed throughout human history as people share ideas with each other.

For example, in the 1700s, Britain built the world's first industrial factories. These factories transformed the way people produced goods. Industrial technology spread, and today, factories are common around the world

• The natural landscape consists of features such as mountains, rivers, and lakes. However, many human-made features are also found on Earth's surface.

• Humans change the landscape by building towns, cities, roads, farms, and parks.

• A few hundred years ago, Pennsylvania was mostly forested. Today

  not so much. Why?

Geographers are interested in how human-made features develop. They may ask, "Why do certain towns grow into large cities, but others do not?"

A major part of human geography is population, or, the number of people who live in a certain place.

Populations change daily. Why do you think this happens?

Population density is the concentration of people who live in a certain sized area.

Low population density: people and buildings further apart.

High population density: people and buildings closer together.
