Look at the map above.
The place highlighted in red is the United States of America!
3
Since we live in Virginia, we must be able to identify Virginia!
Virginia's weird shape helps it stand out, but let's try seeing if we can find Virginia on a larger map!
Take a look above!
This little piece is also part of Virginia!
Virginia is the was among the original 13 states, but was home to the first permanent English settlement in North America.
Virginia, today, remains one of, if not THE, most historically rich state - maybe the most important too!

Which state do you think is Virginia?
5
Virginia's unique shape, and its location along the Atlantic Ocean, help us find it quickly!
Virginia is highlighted in red on the US map.
Virginia is located along the east coast of the US.
6
Here in Virginia, we must know a few symbols. Like our state capital!
A state capital is usually shown with a star, like so:
Virginia's Capital
Richmond is our state capital, so it gets a star on a map!
Our capital city of Richmond is located along the James River.
7
The star isn't just for state capitals, but for national capitals! Richmond is our state capital, but the United States capital is:
WASHINGTON, D.C.
America's Capital
Right here is Virginia, our state.
If we use this compass, we see that Washington D.C. is NORTH of Virginia!
8
The United States Capitol building serves as a symbol of the United States and its democracy. Though it has been targeted in the past, like in the War of 1812 and Civil War, it still persists today and can be visited by anybody!
United States Capitol
The Virginia Capitol building serves as a symbol for Virginia's lawmakers and was built in 1788 - it's still used today AND is free to visit!
(And it was designed by Thomas Jefferson!)
