Colonization in Australia

The first people to live in Australia were Aboriginal Australians, who have been there for thousands of years. They were the first to care for the land, using their knowledge of nature to hunt, gather food, and live in balance with the environment.

Before colonization, Aboriginal Australians lived off the land, moving with the seasons and passing down stories, traditions, and knowledge through their families and communities.

Britain colonized Australia by sending ships with soldiers, settlers, and prisoners called convicts. They took the land without asking the Aboriginal people, which caused many problems and changes for the people who lived there first.

The British forced many changes on Aboriginal people, especially by trying to stop them from speaking their languages. They took land, broke up communities, and made it hard for Aboriginal people to keep their culture and traditions alive.
