In the mid-1960s, the Coordinating Council of Community Organizations (CCCO) was established to protest school segregation in Chicago. Before disbanding in 1967, it turned its attention to other issues like employment and housing discrimination plaguing Black Chicagoans. In 1964, 464,000 students—nearly half of New York City’s student body—boycotted school to protest racial segregation in schools.
