Water on Earth

You learned that Earth's surface is made up of land and water. You also learned about many different landforms that are found on Earth.

There are also many different types of water that can be found on Earth.

The ocean is the largest body of water on Earth. Saltwater is found in the oceans.

There are five oceans throughout the world. The ocean helps separate the seven continents from one another.

​Lakes are bodies of water surrounded by land. Rain, rivers, and melting snow bring water to lakes.

​A pond is a small body of water. It is also surrounded by land, but is smaller than a lake.

​A river is a body of fresh water moving through the land.
A stream is a smaller, more narrow river that often flows between mountains and hills.

A waterfall is moving water that falls over the edge of a cliff. Waterfalls can range from small to very tall.

Ice on Earth

Not all of Earth's water is liquid. Water can be solid, too! Solid water is called ice.

Some places on Earth, such as the North and South Poles, are very cold. Because of how cold it is, the water is frozen year-round at the North and South Poles. The water there forms ice.

Glaciers

Glaciers are solid pieces of ice that are made from fallen snow that has been packed down over many years.

It can take thousands of years for a massive glacier to form.

Most glaciers are found in Antarctica and Greenland, but they can be found all over the world!

There are also other landforms that exist underwater.
