A effective introduction can 'hook' and help maintain your audience's attention.

Types of hooks:
Rhetorical question- ask a question! You may or may not answer it.
Shocking fact- must come from a real, credible source!
Quotation- from a celebrity, or a famous piece of writing
Unexpected statement- subvert or 'upset' the audience's expectations
Humour- draw people in with a joke!
Imaginative statement- use figurative language to draw in the audience
in medias res - start 'in the middle' of an action scene
