The Water Molecule

Water molecules are made of the elements Hydrogen and Oxygen.

H₂O= 2 Hydrogen atoms and 1 Oxygen atom.

Polarity

• Polar opposites- Opposites attract

• Molecules stick together like magnets

I wonder...

What would happen if I squeezed a sponge out in outerspace

Cohesion

Attraction between molecules of the same substance

Adhesion

An attraction between molecules of different substances

How is he doing that?!?!

***Hint it has everything to do with cohesion

Surface Tension

• A measure of how difficult it is to stretch or break the surface of a liquid

• The molecules at the surface do not have other like molecules on all sides of them and consequently they cohere more strongly to those directly associated with them on the surface.

Specific Heat

• So why does it take water So long to heat up?

• As you can see its more than just putting the pot on the stove...
