Irony- the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect.

Verbal Irony
When a person says one thing but means the opposite
Often equated with sarcasm
Example: If this guy said "Great Weather we're having today!"

When the result is the opposite of the expectation
Anytime there is a twist in a story
Example: Firemen from Farenheight 451 set books on fire rather than putting fires out

When the audience knows something the characters do not.
Often used to create tension or humor
Example: In Romeo & Juliet the audience knows that Juliet is sleeping and not dead but Romeo doesn't.
