We are going to define what a "coin" is. We will observe unique features on each coin. You will write notes in your journal, as well as draw each coin. Once we are complete you will be able to identify each coin and its proper value.

• Pencil (eraser)

• Materials in green must haves materials in blue cool to have!

Coin- a flat round piece of metal with an official stamp that is used as money.

Every coin has 2 sides.

The front of the coin is called the obverse. The back of the coin is called the reverse.

Sides of the Coin

• Obverse- the front side or face of a coin. (Heads)

• Reverse- the backside of the coin. (Tails)

Each coin is made with features* that make them different from one another.

• Features- a special quality or appearance.

• Portrait (Heads) / Design (Tails)

• Legend (where coin was made)

• Year/ Motto

Coins that we use as everyday money are "in circulation".

Have you ever noticed that some of the coins you use are old?

Thats because coins can stay in circulation for a very long time. New coins are made every year!
