Ionic bonds form between metals and non-metals.
Metals have 1-2 valence electrons; non-metals have 5-7 valence electrons.
Metals become cations by TRANSFERING their electrons to Non-metals.
Non-metals become anions by accepting electrons.

Chlorine (Cl) is a non-metal with seven valance electrons.
Sodium TRANSFERS one electron to Chlorine.
Sodium becomes a cation (positive charge) and Chlorine becomes an anion (negative charge).
