INTEGERS

​​In Mathematics, the positive and negative numbers are called integers. The set of all integers is denoted by ℤ.

We have four fundamental operations on integers. They are addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

ADDITION OF INTEGERS

Positive + Positive = Positive ​

Ex: 5 + 3 = ​8

Negative + Negative = Negative

Ex: ​(-5) + (-3) = -8

Positive + Negative = use the larger number and its sign, subtract

​Ex: 5 + (-3) = 2

Negative + Positive = ​use the larger number and its sign, subtract

Ex: (-5) + 3 = -2​

SUBTRACTION OF INTEGERS

Negative - Positive = Negative + Negative = ​Negative

Ex: (-5) - 3 = ​(-5) + (-3) = -8

Positive - Negative = Positive + Positive = Positive

Ex: ​5 - (-3) = 5 + 3 = 8

Positive - Positive = Positive + Negative = use the larger number and its sign, subtract

​Ex: 5 - 3 = 5 + (-3) = 2

​Negative - Negative = Negative + Positive = use the larger number and its sign, subtract

​Ex: (-5) - (-3) = (-5) + 3 = -2

MULTIPLICATION OF INTEGERS

Positive × Positive = Positive

Ex: 5 × 3 = ​15

Negative × Negative = Positive

Ex: ​(-5) × (-3) = -15

Negative × Positive = Negative

​Ex: (-5) × 3 = -15

​Positive × Negative = Negative

​Ex: 5 × (-3) = -15

DIVISION OF INTEGERS

Positive ÷ Positive = Positive

Ex: 15 ÷ 3 = ​5

Negative ÷ Negative = Positive

Ex: ​(-15) ÷ (-3) = 5

Negative ÷ Positive = Negative

​Positive ÷ Negative = Negative
