INTEGERS
In Mathematics, the positive and negative numbers are called integers. The set of all integers is denoted by ℤ.
ℤ={...,-2,-1,0,1,2,...}
We have four fundamental operations on integers. They are addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Grade 7 Mathematics
3
ADDITION OF INTEGERS
Positive + Positive = Positive
Ex: 5 + 3 = 8
Negative + Negative = Negative
Ex: (-5) + (-3) = -8
Positive + Negative = use the larger number and its sign, subtract
Ex: 5 + (-3) = 2
Negative + Positive = use the larger number and its sign, subtract
Ex: (-5) + 3 = -2

6
SUBTRACTION OF INTEGERS
Negative - Positive = Negative + Negative = Negative
Ex: (-5) - 3 = (-5) + (-3) = -8
Positive - Negative = Positive + Positive = Positive
Ex: 5 - (-3) = 5 + 3 = 8
Positive - Positive = Positive + Negative = use the larger number and its sign, subtract
Ex: 5 - 3 = 5 + (-3) = 2
Negative - Negative = Negative + Positive = use the larger number and its sign, subtract
Ex: (-5) - (-3) = (-5) + 3 = -2

9
MULTIPLICATION OF INTEGERS
Positive × Positive = Positive
Ex: 5 × 3 = 15
Negative × Negative = Positive
Ex: (-5) × (-3) = -15
Negative × Positive = Negative
Ex: (-5) × 3 = -15
Positive × Negative = Negative
Ex: 5 × (-3) = -15
