Numerical Expressions

​An Expression that contains numbers and operations.

• ​4 + 6 = 10

• ​250 - 150 = 100

• ​12 x 12 = 144

• 99 / 11 = 9

Basic math operations include four basic operations:

● Addition (+)

● Subtraction (-)

● Multiplication (* or x)

● Division ( : or /)

​TO find the value of a numerical expression.

• ​examples:

  • ​13 + 15 = 28

  • ​87 - 49 = 38

  • ​8 * 7 = 56

  • 42/ 6 = 7

​Order of Operations:

​A set of rules for evaluating expressions.

• ​PEMDAS

  • ​Parentheses first

  • ​Exponents (ie Powers and Square Roots, etc.)

  • ​Multiplication and Division (left-to-right)

  • ​Addition and Subtraction (left-to-right)

​Using the Distributive Poperty

​Use the Distributive Property to find 38 x 6

1. ​Break 38 into 30 + 8

2. multiply 30 and 8 by 6

   1. 30 x 8 = 180

   2. 8 x 6 = 48

3. Add the two products together

   1. 180 + 48

   2. = 228

4. 38 x 6 = 228
