Equivalent Fractions

• When comparing two or more fractions with same value

On the right we have the fraction 1/2. Imagine that it is a pizza cut into two slices and you eat one of the slices.

If the same pizza is cut into four slices, you can still eat half but you would need to eat two slices or eat 2/4 of the pizza. So 1/2 is equivalent to 1/4.

How can we use multiplication to make equivalent fractions?

Multiply numerator and denominator by same number or a fraction that represents one whole.

Lets follow the steps to make a fraction equivalent to 3/4

2/2 is equal to 1, and anytime you multiply a number 1 you get an equal number, In this case, you can see that 6/8 is equivalent to 3/4

You can see from the model that even though the fractions are different, their value or the amount shaded is equal. Anytime you multiply or divide your numerator and denominator by the same number you will get an equivalent fraction
