x-value: moves Left and Right

y- value: moves Up and Down

Now that we have two number lines...let's put them together.

One number line goes left and right.
That is the X-Axis

Another number line goes up and down.
That is the Y-axis

Together they make what is called a coordinate plane

A coordinate plane has labels to help us navigate in two dimensions.

The Origin is in the middle (0,0)

There are four Quadrants made by the x and y axis.
Quadrant I
Quadrant II
Quadrant III
Quadrant IV

​Points in the Coordinate Plane

​The points in each of the 4 quadrants are identified using and ordered pair consisting of an x-coordinate and y - coordinate (x,y).

Graphing ​Points in the Coordinate Plane

Graphing in all four quadrants is the same.

First move left or right from the
origin to find the x-coordinate.

Then move up or down to find the
y-coordinate.
