Math Word Problems

You ADD when you are putting together 2 or more groups of any size.

The groups are called ADDENDS and the answer is called the SUM.

You SUBTRACT when you take one group away from another, or if you are comparing numbers.

The answer to a subtraction problem is called the DIFFERENCE.

You MULTIPLY when you are adding equal groups together.

Multiplication is also called repeated addition.

The numbers, or groups, that are multiplied are called FACTORS, and the answer to a multiplication problem is called a PRODUCT, or multiple.

You DIVIDE when you split a total into equal groups, or separate the total with the same number in each group.

The answer to a division problem is called the QUOTIENT.
