We will- Explain how the Northwest Ordinance established principles and procedures for orderly expansion of the U.S

What is the Northwest Ordinance?

REasons to move west

• New markets: Americans can sell goods in new places

• More land: Farmland to grow agricultural goods

• Discovery of gold in California: Americans wanted to become rich finding gold and other resources

Barriers to expansion

• Native Americans: inhabited land in the west

• Land owned by other countries: Mexico owned land that the U.S wanted

• Harsh journey: No paved roads, horrible weather, attacks from native Americans.

Northwest Ordinance

• States had disputes about what land belonged to them after the revolutionary war.

• Northwest Ordinance settled these disputes

• Set up rules on how a territory becomes a state

• Outlawed slavery in the new territories

How a territory becomes a state

• Territory governed by an official from congress, at first.

• once population reaches 5000, territory can elect a self-governing body

  • Representatives, mayors

• Territory can apply for statehood once population hits 60,000 settlers.
