Conditional sentences

USE

▪ Conditional sentences contain two clauses:

•the clause which expresses the condition and usually starts
with the word if;

•the clause which expresses the result.

▪ The two clauses can be inverted without changing the

meaning of the sentence.

▪ When the if clause is at the beginning of the sentence,
it is followed by a comma.

Type 0

�We use a type 0 conditional to talk about things that are always or
generally true, facts, rules to give instructions or advice.

Type 1

�We use a type 1 conditional to talk about future events that are likely/probable
to happen in the present or the future.

Condition

Examples:

If I have time later, I’llpost the photos on Facebook.

If I see Mary at school, I won’t send her an invitation by
email.
