Solving Two-Step Inequalities
2
Start taking notes on your paper now :)
3
Solving two-step inequalities is very similar to solving two-step equations.
-Instead of an equal sign, you will have an inequality symbol.
-Instead of one solution, you will have more than one solution that will make the inequality true
-x > 6 means x is greater than 6. Any number larger than 6 is a solution for this inequality.
4
REMINDER:
If you multiply or divide
both sides by a negative,
you must flip the symbol! Some examples are to the right.
5
REMINDER: When graphing the solution, make a legible circle ON THE LINE and draw a highlighted or darked arrow in the direction of the solution. The symbols and their meaning are listed below.
6
Example a)
Step 1: subtract 5 from both sides
Step 2: multiply 3 on both sides
Step 3: write final answer (x < 15)
Step 4: graph the inequality
7
Example b)
Step 1: subtract 3 from both sides
Step 2: divide by -6 on both sides
Step 3: flip symbol to get final answer of x ≤ -1
Step 4: graph the inequality
8
Example c)
Step 1: add 8 to both sides
Step 2: multiply by -6 on both sides
Step 3: flip symbol to get final answer of x ≤ 24
Step 4: graph the inequality
