You wanted to reach a 'northern state' where slavery
was illegal like Pennsylvania, New York or
Maine

• The Fugitive Slave Act was a series of federal laws (entire country) that required the return of enslaved people who escaped to free states. The laws were passed in 1793 and 1850.

• The Northern States did not like these laws.

• Those that helped in the Underground Railroad took great risks in the North.

• Do you think people in the Northern states continued to help slaves to freedom with the Underground Railroad?
