Ahmed really hadn’t planned on staying in the cellar more than a day or two. But the morning after he arrived, he woke up feverish, his throat so sore he could barely swallow. For three days, he shivered and sweated and slept, curled up on the blanket. (page 42)

“You just need a little help,” Ahmed whispered to them in Arabic. He carried them one by one to the bathroom, dunked their roots in lukewarm water in the stopped-up sink and let them drain. (page 45)
