Kinetic Energy
8.E.13. Analyze graphical displays of data to describe the relationship of mass and velocity of an object to its kinetic energy (KE).

Kinetic Energy
3
Factors Affecting Kinetic Energy
Mass (m): amount of matter in an object
The greater the mass, the higher the kinetic energy, if velocity is constant.
Example: A truck vs. a bicycle moving at the same speed.
Velocity (v): rate at which an object changes it position
Velocity has a greater impact because it is squared in the formula.
Example: Doubling the velocity quadruples the kinetic energy.

Kinetic energy is...
energy carried in ultraviolet waves
energy stored in food
energy in motion
energy from splitting an atom
6
Multiple Choice
What two factors affect an object's kinetic energy?
area and volume
mass and weight
weight and height
mass and speed (velocity)
7
Multiple Choice
If moving at the same speed (velocity), increasing an object's mass will increase its kinetic energy.
true
false
8
As the mass increases, the kinetic energy increases. (Linear relationship)
Mass is on the x-axis. It is the independent variable.
Kinetic energy is on the y-axis. It is the dependent variable.

X-axis: Velocity (m/s)
Y-axis: Kinetic Energy (Joules)
Observation: Exponential relationship—as velocity increases, KE increases rapidly.
