​Rotations, Reflections, and Translations

​Students will explain the effect of translations, reflections over the x- and y- axis, and rotations limited to 90°, 180°, 270°, and 360° as applied to two-dimensional shapes on a coordinate plane using an algebraic representation. 

​Given cards, students will explore the transformations of rotations, reflections, and translations of two-dimensional figures on coordinate planes, using coordinates to describe the changes and positions. with 100% accuracy.

​When a figure undergoes rotation, reflection, or translation, what potentially changes—position, orientation, or size?

​Patty Paper: Patty paper can be used to help you discover the transformation from one figure to the next.
Trace the original figure on the patty paper.

Rotation - TURN the patty paper

Reflection - FLIP the patty paper

Translation - SLIDE the patty paper across the paper

Try to line up the original image with the new image.

There are 6 colored pencils in your group. Each student select 2 colored pencils to use for this activity.

The color you chose represents the card number you will complete.

Complete each card task in order by plotting the given ordered pairs on the coordinate plane.

Write the card's number inside of your triangle as you complete the task.

Trace your triangle on your patty paper.

When you are done, discuss the movements each triangle made from one triangle to the next with your group.
