Today, every child has a right to education, regardless of gender. However, there was a time when women were not allowed this right. One of the earliest people who fought for this right was Juana Ramírez de Asbaje of Mexico.

Juana grew up in mid-seventeenth-century Mexico at a time when women were denied higher education. She joined the church as a nun and became Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz to fulfill her dream of attaining intellectual independence. Sor is the Spanish word for nun. A nun is a woman who belongs to a religious order. Nuns often use the title Sister to convey that they are part of the church family but not the head of it.
