Because Europeans did not understand the true cause of the plague, they had many un-effective cures.

Medieval Europeans would try and drain the blood out of victims of the plague. 

The plague was caused by fleas on rats that carried dangerous bacteria.

People believed that Satan was the cause of the Black Death.
