Multiple Choice
Which of the following statements best describes the structure of ATP?
ATP consists of a ribose sugar, three phosphate groups, and a nitrogenous base.
ATP is made up of two phosphate groups and a glucose molecule.
ATP contains a deoxyribose sugar, three phosphate groups, and a nitrogenous base.
ATP is formed only from fatty acids and glycerol.

During cellular respiration, ATP is produced primarily in which cellular organelle?
Nucleus
Mitochondria
Ribosome
Endoplasmic reticulum
5
Multiple Choice
What happens to ATP when it releases energy for cellular processes?
It gains a phosphate group to become ADP.
It loses a phosphate group to become ADP.
It converts back to glucose.
It becomes a nucleic acid

Chemical Energy

Let's make the connection…
Where do cells get energy?
Carbohydrates, lipids
●What has to happen to carbs and lipids to make useful energy?
Needs to be digested, broken down, bonds broken
Cellular respiration- transfers energy from organic molecules (like food)
to ATP
ATP=adenosine triphosphate
Energy currency of the cell

ATP
Adenosine Triphosphate
Like a battery for your cells!
Consider the way our community uses coal, wind or solar as
an energy source, but in order to use it we transfer the energy to electricity then charge batteries for our phones, computers etc.
Coal, wind, solar=glucose
Electricity=ATP

Photosynthesis produces
glucose for plants
Glucose produces ATP
through cellular respiration

In a controlled greenhouse environment, researchers designed an experiment to study the relationship between photosynthesis and cellular respiration in plants. They planted two sets of the same species, one set placed under high-intensity light and the other under low-intensity light. The goal was to measure the rate of photosynthesis and cellular respiration in both conditions over a two-week period.
The researchers collected data on the amount of oxygen produced (a byproduct of photosynthesis) and the amount of carbon dioxide consumed (a byproduct of cellular respiration) during this time. Below is the data set showing the average rate of oxygen produced and carbon dioxide consumed in both light conditions.
Type of light intensity | average oxygen produced | average CO2 consumed. |
|---|---|---|
high | 300 | 150 |
low | 150 | 120 |
Do plants prefer high-intensity light
or low-intensity light? Answer on the next slide

Do plants prefer high or low intensity light? How do you know?
14
Energy is released when bond between phosphate groups is broken.
How is ATP generated?
●During cellular respiration- cell gets energy from breakdown of macromolecules.
●This allows a phosphate group to be added to ADP (Adenosine diphosphate)

ADP is like a partially charged battery that needs to be recharged. ATP is like a
fully charged battery that is ready to provide energy for a cellular task
