• WHMIS stands for “Workplace

Hazardous Materials Information
System”

• The purpose of WHMIS is to

control the safety labels and
information for chemicals found in
a workplace, this includes schools.

What is WHMIS?

• A government controlled set of

rules that all businesses must
comply with for worker safety.

• We use WHMIS to regulate labels

on chemicals and informative
symbols so safety is consistent
across the country.

How Does WHMIS Work?

• In WHMIS, pictograms are used to indicate the

danger of a material found in the workplace.
Each pictogram has its own unique danger.

• In addition to symbols

with generalized
warnings, WHMIS
requires information be
provided to employees
via:
– The Supplier Label

– The Workplace Label

– The SDS

container, and will be stored, we must place
a label on this new container.

• All chemicals need to have

a SDS kept in one place,
usually a binder.

• HHPS stands for “Household

Hazardous Products Symbols”

• HHPS was developed for chemicals

used by people in their homes and
provides 2 pieces of information:
– a warning symbol and a
– level of warning

What is HHPS

• HHPS is used on very “basic”

chemicals, therefore there are only
4 different symbols.

• Materials which are poisonous

can be toxic to your health if
ingested or absorbed into the
body.

• Materials which are explosive

expand at high rates, which
can be dangerous and harmful.
They can even rupture a
container.

• Materials which are corrosive

can create chemical reactions
that will dissolve or “eat away”
flesh.

can catch fire very easily, so
keep flames and sparks away.

• Warning symbols are paired with 3

different polygons, representing the
level of danger associated with the
chemical.
