1. Read and summarize major points of story
2. Ask what topic(s) is the author trying to give a message about?

3. Analyze different elements of the story to look for patterns.

4. Make a universal theme statement!

“Little Red Riding Hood”

Summary: Mysterious wolf tricks little girl going to visit her grandmother so he can eat her.

Topic: Strangers, appearances, trust, family, travel, innocence

Theme: Appearances are not always what they seem.

Multiple themes can be present in media/literature at the same time...
