What is Water & Why is it Important?

• We are mostly water; actually, all living things are mostly water

• We need clean water to stay healthy

• The average human can't go more than 3 days w/o water

• The world is mostly water

• Without water, life would not be possible!

Our Hydrosphere

• Water can be destructive, it can save lives, it can give life or take it away

• No new water is being created. What we have has been recycled (hydrologic cycle) for centuries

• Water covers about 71% of the Earth's surface

• 97% of the world's water is OCEAN water

• 3% of the world's water is freshwater

• 80% of the freshwater is frozen in the polar ice caps!

How do YOU use Water?

• The average Texan can live on 1 gallon of water per day for drinking, cooking, and washing

• However, most people use MUCH more- up to 90 gal/day!!

• The need for water has more than tripled over 50 years

• As more people move to Texas, our water becomes in more demand

• In turn, our rivers, streams, lakes, etc have taken a hit and some have dried up almost completely

• Water is the MOST important resource in Texas

• 1.26 million acres of freshwater lakes, ponds, reservoirs

• 2.1 million acres of water in our bays and estuaries on our coast

• 191,000 miles of rivers and streams

• 75% of our state has an underground aquifer under it!

• 3,000 natural springs

• 15 rivers

• Some areas of TX receive over 60" of rain/yr...other areas may receive less than 10" all year
