Secara etimologis, istilah deskripsi berasal dari bahasa latin yaitu ‘describere’ yang memiliki arti menggambarkan atau memberikan penjelasan mengenai sesuatu.

Menurut Henry Guntur Tarigan, deskripsi adalah tulisan yang bisa menggambarkan sebuah cerita dengan tujuan mengajak pembaca supaya bisa memahami, merasakan dan menikmati sesuatu yang dibicarakan di dalam teks, seperti aktivitas, emosi dan lain-lain.
